Form democratic citizens or lose democracy at the ballot box

At a time of deep political division, something unusual is happening in the United States: a growing number of Republicans are putting democracy above party and supporting Democratic presidential candidate Harris. How can we promote that kind of loyalty to democracy through education? You will get: * Insight into key similarities and differences between the USA, Europe and the Nordic countries * Insight into the structural similarities and differences in our societal and democratic challenges * An understanding of where the low-hanging fruit is if we want to preserve democracy in a world of artificial intelligence and climate change. As we face unprecedented global challenges, on the one hand, the United States appears to be falling apart; on the other hand, the country has the opportunity to lead by example and save democracy. This keynote will examine the deeper political and cultural forces creating the gap between democracy and autocracy, and it will show why the United States, as the world's oldest modern democracy, must lead by example. But it's not just about politics – it's about education. To maintain democracy, we must rethink how we educate ourselves as citizens. We cannot just be consumers and employees, we have to be informed, engaged and morally grounded individuals. Based on historical experience, this keynote will inspire action: to rebuild our democratic foundations through education and formation and ensure a future where democracy thrives both in the United States and in the rest of the world.
