A brain-friendly approach to climate action

When asked directly, up to 95 percent of us are willing to change climate behavior if we can decide the pace and method ourselves. We want to show that we are climate conscious, but at the same time we don't want to sacrifice too much. We are prepared, but still do not choose the climate-friendly alternative in the situation. Perhaps because we are not reminded of it, or because things are not arranged in a way where we are easily and discreetly led to a climate-friendly choice. Perhaps because legislators, authorities and institutions are not sufficiently aware that a green transition must be followed by a green attitude. We have to have the brain with us, so to speak, to get the heart with us. The human brain is both lazy, social and curious. It basically wants to save energy, but also wants to be entertained and challenged. If the climate is to change, it must be easy. If not easy, then fun. If neither easy nor fun, then rewarding. Preferably all three. If neither, forget it! In other words, it must be brain-friendly. The light is about the design of surroundings and experiences that can influence behavior in the desired direction without too much deprivation or contribution. The fun comes when climate action is carried out imaginatively and playfully in small and large communities. It becomes rewarding when we can see that it is useful. When negative attitudes turn into positive contributions, bad conscience turns into good results, and a heavy burden is lifted together. In his sometimes provocative but always entertaining lecture, Laust gives concrete and up-to-date suggestions on how climate action could accelerate if it were easier, more fun and more rewarding to contribute.
