Stephen is appointed as one of the three leading lecturers at Europe's best MBA Business School, Cranfield. He is recognized for distilling complex management concepts such as project and crisis management down to informative and humorous lectures, often using storytelling. His motto is: "If you haven't done it yourself, don't teach it". Very atypical for an academic, he has spent most of his working life as a businessman and still runs a very successful project management firm whose clients include the FTSE/Dow top 100. Stephen is a most unusual mix of academic, businessman and storyteller. He has taught in the UK, USA, Germany, France, Portugal, Singapore, Hong Kong and Australia and has appeared on national radio and TV. Some of his lectures are as follows: SHUTTLE THE CASE - The importance of communication. Project outsourcing. Keeping organizational learning alive. Pitfalls of groupthink. January 28, 1986 – The space shuttle Challenger explodes one minute after launch. As the world watched in horror, few realized that this was an inevitable accident that the designers had been predicting for years. The day before, the chief engineers had understood that there was a "100% probability of disaster". After the accident, NASA realized they had pushed the limits too far and initiated major management changes. However, these changes made the forward launches too safe, and subsequently resulted in standards and conditions slipping once again. In February 2003, the space shuttle Colombia burned and the entire crew perished. The fact here was that it was a managerial repeat of the Challenger disaster. NASA had failed to learn from past experiences. BRITISH ROCKS - Plan according to conditions. Stakeholder management. Ideas for reality. Enthusiasm versus planning. This is a cautionary tale of how two swashbuckler heroes, Richard Branson and Chay Blyth, learned the difference between project management and enthusiasm management. The idea was brilliant – Americans love all things British and they love Tall Ships, so why not combine the two and create a floating Harrods and bring it to the US? The concept was brilliant, the enthusiasm was overwhelming, the teamwork was magnificent, outsourcing high – however, the planning was non-existent. A lovely story about how even good ideas can fail if you call the project manager (Stephen) too late! THE DAVY CASE - Contract awareness. Strength of personality. "Money is King". Exit planning. There once was an oil platform called Ali Baba. It was built in Norway in 1976 and for many years supplied oil to the whole world. But in 1989, this wealth became the focus of one of the North Sea's most extraordinary stories – the story of how an ex-diver dreamed of developing his own oil field. The actors in this unusual but true story include the British Government, Davy International, Trafalgar House, Hong Kong Land, Kvaerner and the Finish State Oil company. The story traces the progress of this incredible dream from its humble beginnings to its spectacular realization and its eventual degeneration into a commercial and contractual nightmare. A tale of warning and doom – the story of a platform too far. THE BATTLE FOR THE UK - Projects vs. programs. Complexity. Leadership in tough times. Dealing with uncertainty. Dynamic environments. Strategic visioning. Change is a risk – but also an opportunity. Project and program management are the conventional tools associated with risk management; but recent ground-breaking research at one of the UK's leading Business Schools has found that these conventional methods could be missing more than half the picture of the dynamic and complex markets in which we navigate. Using the analogy of flying, Stephen takes this fun and moving session to explore how projects and programs can be managed in different ways and thus improve risk management methods. From flying solo to orchestrating the Battle of Britain, Stephen shows organizations how to get off the ground and lose the fear of flying with projects and programmes. This groundbreaking lecture changes the perception of risk and shows how much can be achieved by the few, for the benefit of the many!
