Dr. Michael Osterholm is director of the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy. Dr. Osterholm has been referred to by CNN as "the infectious disease expert who has been warning us for a decade and a half that the world will face a pandemic" and quickly became a leader in relation to the public health impact of COVID-19. He is a sharp critic of the complacency that led to the current global pandemic and points to the current shortcomings of our system and the urgent need to mobilize the health care system. Dr. Michael Osterholm predicted a pandemic like COVID-19 in his best-selling book: “Deadliest Enemy: Our War Against Killer Germs”, a chillingly prescient and detailed account of the most pressing infectious diseases of our time. In "Deadliest Enemy", Dr. Osterholm a strategy to combat "an overwhelming army of deadly, invisible enemies" and lays out a nine-point plan to prevent "the unthinkable from the inevitable." Dr. Osterholm currently serves as Chair of Public Health, Director of the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy (CIDRAP), Distinguished Teaching Professor in the Department of Environmental Health Sciences for the School of Public Health, Professor in the Technological Leadership Institute at the College of Science and Engineering, as Regents Professor , and finally as an assistant professor of medicine, all at the University of Minnesota. Between June 2018 and May 2019, Dr. Michael Osterholm as spokesperson for health security on behalf of the US Department of State. In 2008, he was selected for the World Economic Forum Working Group on Pandemics. Prior to this, in 2005 he was selected to the newly created National Science Advisor Board for Biosecurity, and he served as a special advisor to the Secretary of Health and Human Services between 2001 and 2005. Prior to this, he spent 24 years in various roles at the Minnesota Department of Health, the last 15 as state epidemiologist and head of the Section for Acute Disease. He is an expert on bioterrorism and has produced a detailed review of America's current preparation for a bioterrorist attack in his New York Times bestselling book, "Living Terrors: What America Needs to Know to Survive the Coming Bioterrorist Catastrophe." He is the author of more than 315 articles including 21 book chapters. Dr. Osterholm serves on the boards of nine infectious disease epidemiological journals and is a reviewer for The New England Journal of Medicine. He is a frequent consultant to the WHO, National Institute of Health, Centers for Disease Control, graduated from the American College of Epidemiology and the Infectious Diseases Society of America, and has received six major research awards from the NIH and CDC.
