Bettany Hughes is an award-winning historian, author and host whose specialty is ancient and medieval history and culture. She has taught at the universities of Bristol, Manchester, UCL, Oxford and Cambridge, and is a research fellow at King's College London. She is a fascinating speaker with a wide range of lectures on the history that has shaped our planet and her own very successful career. Her first book, "Helen of Troy: Goddess, Princess, Whore," has been translated into ten languages. Her second book, "The Hemlock Cup, Socrates, Athens and the Search for the Good Life," was a New York Times bestseller and was nominated for a Writer's Guild Award. Bettany Hughes has written and presented numerous documentaries for the BBC, Channel 4, Discovery, PBS, The History Channel, National Geographic and ITV. Her programs have now been seen by over 150 million people worldwide. In 2010 she received the Naomi Sargent Education Prize for Broadcast Excellence and was awarded a special award for her contribution to Hellenistic culture and heritage. In 2011 she chaired the Orange Prize for Fiction and was made an Honorary Fellow of the Historical Association and Cardiff University. She received the Norton Medlicott Prize for her contribution to history in 2012. In 2013 she received an honorary doctorate from York University for her "outstanding" contribution to history and its international promotion. Bettany Hughes is a long-time patron and supporter of the education and campaigning organization "The Iris Project", which promotes and teaches Latin and Greek in state schools. She is an honorary founding patron of "Classics For All," a national campaign to restore the classical languages and the study of classical civilizations to public schools, and an advisor to the Foundation for Science Technology and Civilization, which promotes major East-West cooperative projects. She co-produced a 7-part global documentary series on the common roots of Eastern and Western culture, which was presented at UNESCO in 2013. She also created a 10-part series on the history of ideas for the BBC. Bettany Hughes was included in the BBC's 100 Global Women list and has always been interested and involved in writing and historical research about the position of women in society, which has led to her contributions as a commentator for newspapers such as The Guardian, The Times and The Daily Telegraph. Her latest book Istanbul: A Tale of Three Cities was published in early 2017 and is still one of Amazon's bestsellers.
