Om Baroness Catherine Ashton
In November 2009, Catherine Ashton was appointed as the EU's High Representative for the common foreign and security policy. Since 2009, she has also served as Secretary General of the Western Union. In May 2012, Catherine Ashton was awarded the BusinessMed Blue Award. This is based on her efforts in relation to peace and economic development in the region around the Mediterranean Sea. The Blue Award is also known as the "Mare Nostrum" and is an award that is presented each year to a person selected by the Union of Mediterranean Confederations of Enterprises. As EU Commissioner for Foreign Affairs, her CV includes a wide range of roles; traditional diplomacy, co-ordination of various foreign policy initiatives, development aid, trade, humanitarian aid and critical responsibility, including maintaining consensus between the EU countries. Before her current position, Catherine Ashton was a member of the Commission, where she was responsible for trade. Catherine also spearheaded the negotiations on the free trade agreement with Korea, which was concluded in October 2009. She has also resolved several trade disputes with key partners. In addition, she has improved the EU's economic relations with Africa, the Caribbean and Pacific countries. In 2005, Catherine was appointed as "Minister of the Year" by The House Magazine and "Peer of the Year" by Channel 4. She won "Politician of the Year" in 2006 at the annual Stonewall Award. In June 2007, she was appointed to the Cabinet in Great Britain as leader of the upper parliamentary chamber, the House of Lords.
